Under Ballast Mat is a flexible rubber mat laid directly beneath the ballast layer of ballasted railway track. Acting as an elastic separator between the ballast and the substructure, it provides vibration isolation and structural protection.
It works on the mass–spring principle: the ballasted track is the mass and the continuous flexible mat is the spring. Transmission of noise and vibration to surrounding structures is reduced while the drainage behaviour of the track remains unchanged. The same elasticity slows down ballast degradation and protects the structure underneath.
